Eating Disorders have the highest mortality of any mental disorder.
A study by the National Association of Anorexia Nervosa and Associated Disorders (ANAD) reported the following eating disorder statistics:
5-10% of anorexics die within 10 years after contracting the disease and 18-20% of anorexics will be dead after 20 years.
20-50% of people with anorexia will develop bulimia over time, according to a meta-analysis of studies in mortality and eating disorders.
Across studies, approximately 20 to 40% of deaths in AN are thought to result from suicide.
The mortality rate associated with anorexia nervosa is 12 times higher than the death rate of ALL causes of death for females 15-24 years old.
Suicide attempts occur in approximately 3-20% of patients with anorexia nervosa and in 25-35% of patients with bulimia nervosa.
Bulimia Nervosa mortality rate was 3.9% for the overall sample of patients (Eur Eat Disord Rev. 2013; 21:15).
Suicide rate does not occur to be higher among Bulimia Nervosa than control group.
